STL vs 3MF vs OBJ vs GLB — which format do you need?

Each 3D format has a job:

  • STL — the universal 3D printing format. Shape only: no units, colors or settings.
  • 3MF — the modern printing format used by Bambu Studio and OrcaSlicer. Stores millimetre units and is smaller than STL.
  • OBJ — common in 3D modelling apps such as Blender and in many online model libraries.
  • GLB — the web and AR format, used by online 3D viewers, websites and augmented-reality previews.

How to convert STL to 3MF for Bambu Studio

Choose your STL, then click 3MF. The file downloads immediately and opens in Bambu Studio or OrcaSlicer at the correct size. Going the other way, choose a 3MF and click STL to share a model with someone using Cura or an older slicer.

The converter changes the file’s geometry only. It does not convert STL to STEP, G-code or SVG — STEP needs CAD software, and G-code comes from slicing.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between STL and 3MF?

STL stores only the shape with no units, so models can come in at the wrong size. 3MF stores units and settings and is the default format in Bambu Studio and OrcaSlicer.

How do I convert GLB to STL for printing?

Choose the GLB file, then STL. GLB files use metres and a different up-axis; we convert them automatically to millimetres with Z up, as slicers expect.

Are colors kept?

No, the converter carries over geometry only. Add colors in your slicer after importing.

Can I convert 3MF to STL?

Yes. Choose the 3MF file and click STL. Multi-part 3MF files are merged into one STL.

How do I convert STL to G-code?

G-code is made by slicing, not converting. Open the STL in Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or Cura, choose your printer and material, and export G-code.
