How to use it

  1. 1Pick filament or resin and enter the amount used, as shown by your slicer (Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or Chitubox).
  2. 2Enter the spool or bottle price and its weight or volume.
  3. 3Enter the print time and the printer’s average power, then pick the tariff tier on your electricity bill.
  4. 4Add the printer price, expected life, failure rate and markup to see the full cost and a selling price.

Where does the cost of a print go?

For most prints the material is the biggest line, while electricity in Jordan is usually just a few piasters per print. Machine wear, consumables (nozzles, build plates, FEP film) and failed prints add up to a cost many beginners forget to count.

How to calculate 3D printing cost

The real cost of a print is more than the plastic. The calculator adds up:

  • Material — grams (or ml) used ÷ spool (or bottle) size × its price.
  • Electricity — average watts × hours × your tariff. Jordan’s residential tariff ranges from 50 to 200 fils per kWh.
  • Machine wear — printer price spread over its expected life, plus nozzles, plates and FEP film.
  • Failures — a percentage added so good prints pay for the failed ones.
  • Labor — your time for preparing, removing supports and finishing.

Example: what a typical PLA print costs in Jordan

A 50 g PLA print that takes 3 hours on a 450 JOD printer drawing about 120 W costs roughly 0.70 JOD in filament at 14 JOD per spool, about 0.04 JOD in electricity at 100 fils/kWh, and around 0.33 JOD in machine wear — about 1.17 JOD with a 10% failure allowance. At a 100% markup that is a selling price of about 2.35 JOD.

Frequently asked questions

How much electricity does a 3D printer use?

Most home FDM printers average 80–150 W while printing (more while the bed heats up at the start), and resin printers 40–80 W. A 5-hour print at 120 W uses only 0.6 kWh.

What is the electricity tariff in Jordan?

The EMRC subsidized residential tariff is 50 fils/kWh up to 300 kWh a month, 100 fils from 301–600 kWh and 200 fils above 600 kWh. The non-subsidized residential tariff is 120 fils/kWh up to 1,000 kWh. Check your bill to see which tier applies to you.

How should I price prints I sell?

Start from the full cost in this calculator (not just the material), then add a markup that covers your time for design, messaging and packing. Many sellers use 100–300% for custom parts.

Why add a failure rate?

Some prints fail and get reprinted, and the good prints have to pay for them. 5–10% is realistic for a well-tuned printer.

How much does it cost to 3D print something?

For typical PLA prints the material is 10–20 fils per gram, electricity is a few fils per hour, and the full cost of a small part is usually well under 1 JOD. Use the calculator for your exact numbers.
